Care step by step

Mulching a garden

The right material and depth support the root zone without creating a wet collar around the plant.

Good timing

Apply after preparing and moistening the soil when you want to stabilise root-zone conditions.

When to wait

Do not heap mulch against trunks, crowns or soft stems, and do not cover persistently waterlogged soil.

What to record

The material, depth, area and moisture condition beneath it.

Care

A useful routine

  1. 1

Remove weeds and check soil moisture.

  2. 2

Spread an even layer with clear space around plant bases.

  3. 3

Lift the mulch occasionally to inspect moisture and pests.

Observation

Before you finish

  • The material suits the plants and site.
  • Trunks and crowns remain uncovered.
  • The layer does not block drainage.
Important

Mulch is not a substitute for correcting severe drainage problems. Keep it away from trunks and crowns.
