Care step by step

Overseeding a lawn

Seed cannot establish through a thick thatch layer or in conditions that repeatedly dry the surface.

Good timing

Choose moderate temperatures and stable moisture with enough growing time before heat or frost.

When to wait

Do not sow onto heavy thatch, severely compacted soil or before a period when moisture cannot be maintained.

What to record

The seed mix, labelled rate, area, date, weather and germination progress.

Care

A useful routine

  1. 1

Correct the cause of thinning and prepare seed-to-soil contact.

  2. 2

Use a mix suited to light, use and local conditions.

  3. 3

Maintain germination moisture and delay mowing until seedlings are established.

Observation

Before you finish

  • The cause of bare areas is addressed.
  • Seed has direct contact with prepared soil.
  • Water and weather can support establishment.
Important

Use a grass mix suited to the site. Extra seed cannot compensate for deep shade, compaction or unresolved disease.
