Care step by step

Preparing a garden for winter

Useful preparation protects vulnerable plants, soil, irrigation and tools without removing every healthy leaf or sealing wet growth.

Good timing

Spread the work across autumn: water where needed, remove diseased debris and add protection when conditions justify it.

When to wait

Do not wrap wet plants too early or make hard cuts on species that are vulnerable before winter.

What to record

Protected plants, materials used, watering and the planned spring removal date.

Care

A useful routine

  1. 1

Identify genuinely vulnerable plants and exposed locations.

  2. 2

Remove diseased material while keeping useful healthy habitat where appropriate.

  3. 3

Install breathable protection at the right time and record it in the plan.

Observation

Before you finish

  • Evergreens enter freezing weather with adequate soil moisture.
  • Covers are breathable and secure.
  • Irrigation, tools and products are protected.
Important

Winter needs vary by plant and local climate. Overprotection can trap moisture and warmth at the wrong time.
