Seasonal care

Houseplants in winter

Plants may use less root-zone water while their leaves experience drier air, so adding water automatically is not the answer.

Priorities now

Provide the best available light, stable temperature and regular brief pest inspections.

What can wait

Heavy feeding, major repotting and hard pruning can usually wait for active growth unless the plant has an urgent problem.

What to track

Radiators, cold glass, drying speed and spider mites.

Calendar

A practical seasonal check

  1. 1

Check that foliage is clear of cold glass.

  2. 2

Test the soil before every watering.

  3. 3

Inspect leaf undersides during a short regular check.

Observation

Keep the plan flexible

  • The plant is not trapped between a heater and cold window.
  • Watering reflects current light.
  • Pest signs are recorded early.
Important

Use Houseplants in winter as a planning cue, then adjust every task to local weather, soil and the current condition of the plant or lawn.
