Practical plant care

How to quarantine a new houseplant

Pests may be hidden at purchase or present only in one life stage. Quarantine creates time for calm observation without exposing the whole collection.

Separate position

It should limit leaf contact, shared tools and draining water.

First inspection

Remove packaging and check the sheltered places where pests hide.

Repeat check

One inspection may miss eggs or a very small population.

More useful detail

How to narrow down the cause

Repeat inspections

A later check can reveal young pest stages that were not visible on purchase day.

Separate tools too

Shared scissors, saucers and drainage water can spread a problem even when the plant stands apart.

Guide

What to do step by step

  1. 1

Photograph the plant's condition on arrival.

  2. 2

Clean the outer pot and use separate tools or disinfect them.

  3. 3

Before quarantine ends, repeat the inspection in strong light.

Observation

What to watch next

  • No fresh marks, stickiness or distortion appear.
  • No insects appear on sticky traps or leaf undersides.
  • The mix dries normally without flies or bad smells.
Important

Quarantine does not mean keeping a plant in a dark corner. Poor conditions can create symptoms unrelated to pests.
