Plant problems

Root rot

Soft dark roots, sour-smelling mix and a declining plant in persistently wet soil require prompt attention.

Saturation

Persistently wet low-oxygen mix weakens roots.

Cold

Cool conditions slow drying and plant activity.

Poor structure

Collapsed dense mix can hold water while excluding air.

Problem

What to do next

  1. 1

Remove the plant carefully and inspect the root system.

  2. 2

Cut only clearly dead tissue with clean tools.

  3. 3

Repot into an appropriately sized drained container and correct the conditions.

Observation

When to act sooner

  • Rot reaches the crown or main stem.
  • Most roots are lost.
  • The plant is valuable and correct identification is uncertain.
Important

Do not cut healthy firm roots simply because they are dark in colour. Texture, smell and the plant species all matter.
