Aglaonema: light, watering and colourful leaves

Aglaonema. It adapts well to indoor conditions, but cold and constantly wet soil quickly weaken the roots.

Aglaonema

Light

Medium to bright indirect light; red cultivars need more of it.

Watering

Water after the mix has partly dried and do not leave water in the outer pot.

Soil

A free-draining houseplant mix.

Care over time

Rhythm through the year

With good light it can grow for much of the year. In winter it usually dries more slowly, so do not keep a summer calendar.

Growth and repotting

Repot only once roots clearly fill the container. Older healthy clumps can be divided carefully.

Plant

A simple care routine for Aglaonema

  1. 1

Check both moisture and room temperature.

  2. 2

Protect the plant from cold draughts.

  3. 3

    Rotate it for balanced growth.

Observation

Changes worth checking

  • Whole stems turning yellow
  • Brown, water-soaked patches
  • New leaves losing their colour
Important

Aglaonema contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
