Bird of paradise: bright light, watering and strong growth

Strelitzia reginae. It needs more light than many houseplants to maintain strong, upright leaves.

Bird of paradise

Light

A very bright position; introduce direct sun gradually.

Watering

Water after the mix has partly dried and remove all excess water.

Soil

A fertile, free-draining mix that supports the heavy top growth.

More useful detail

Care over time

Rhythm through the year

Growth and water use usually rise in spring and summer. In autumn and winter, let available light guide watering.

Growth and repotting

Repot once roots have filled the container. A large plant needs a heavy, stable pot with drainage.

Plant

A simple care routine for Bird of paradise

  1. 1

Choose the brightest safe position available.

  2. 2

Water only after checking deeper in the pot.

  3. 3

Clean the large leaves and inspect them against the light.

Observation

Changes worth checking

  • Damage beyond normal leaf splitting
  • Curling leaves above wet soil
  • Fine pale stippling or webbing
Important

Watering frequency changes with light, temperature, pot size and potting mix. Use any interval as a reminder to check the plant, not as an automatic watering day.
