Echeveria: compact rosettes and strong light

Echeveria. A compact, colourful rosette requires strong light; fertilizer cannot correct stretching.

Echeveria

Light

Very bright, ideally with some direct sun after acclimation.

Watering

Water after the mix dries completely and keep water out of the rosette.

Soil

A mineral, fast-drying mix.

More useful detail

Care over time

Rhythm through the year

Avoid sudden scorching summer sun. In cool winter conditions, water very sparingly.

Growth and repotting

Offsets can be separated after forming roots. A stretched rosette may sometimes be renewed by rerooting.

Plant

A simple care routine for Echeveria

  1. 1

Check light and moisture before taking action.

  2. 2

Rotate the pot and water the mix rather than the rosette.

  3. 3

Track changes in new growth instead of judging only old damage.

Observation

Changes worth checking

  • A rosette stretching toward the window
  • Soft lower leaves
  • Blackening in the rosette centre
Important

Watering frequency changes with light, temperature, pot size and potting mix. Use any interval as a reminder to check the plant, not as an automatic watering day.
