Mistletoe cactus: a forest cactus with trailing stems

Rhipsalis baccifera. Rhipsalis comes from moister habitats and, as an epiphyte, has different needs from desert cacti.

Mistletoe cactus

Light

Bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun.

Watering

Water after partial drying; do not keep it dry as long as a desert cactus.

Soil

A highly aerated, lightly organic and free-draining mix.

More useful detail

Care over time

Rhythm through the year

It grows with regular light moisture in summer. Water less in winter without keeping it bone dry.

Growth and training

Stem sections can root after the cut surface has dried briefly.

Plant

A simple care routine for Mistletoe cactus

  1. 1

Check light and moisture deeper in the pot.

  2. 2

Provide airflow and drainage, and assess stem firmness before watering.

  3. 3

Track successive leaves and the pace of growth.

Observation

Changes worth checking

  • Stems staying wrinkled
  • Blackening at the base
  • Red colour after excessive sun
Important

Watering frequency changes with light, temperature, pot size and potting mix. Use any interval as a reminder to check the plant, not as an automatic watering day.
