Peace lily care: watering, wilting and flowers

Spathiphyllum. Peace lilies wilt noticeably when dry, but repeated dramatic wilting is not a substitute for checking the soil regularly.

Peace lily

Light

Bright, indirect light; deep shade slows growth and flowering.

Watering

Keep it evenly moist while still allowing excess water to drain.

Soil

A free-draining houseplant mix in a pot with drainage.

More useful detail

Care over time

Flowering

An established peace lily needs enough indirect light. Extra fertilizer cannot compensate for a position that is consistently too dark.

Safety

The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals and can irritate if chewed. Keep it away from children and pets.

Plant

A simple care routine for Peace lily

  1. 1

Check the soil before assuming every wilt means thirst.

  2. 2

Empty the saucer or cover pot after watering.

  3. 3

Compare light and new growth over several weeks.

Observation

Changes worth checking

  • Frequent wilting between waterings
  • Brown leaf tips
  • No flowers on an established plant
Important

Peace lilies contain calcium oxalate crystals. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets, and do not allow the leaves to be chewed.
