Spider plant: watering, plantlets and brown tips

Chlorophytum comosum. It is resilient and produces runners readily, but brown tips can have several different causes.

Spider plant

Light

Bright, indirect light; it tolerates lower light but grows more slowly.

Watering

Water after the surface has lightly dried, without leaving the roots standing in water.

Soil

A light, free-draining houseplant mix.

More useful detail

Care over time

Rhythm through the year

Drying speed follows light and temperature. Check the pot more often during brighter, warmer growth.

Growth and repotting

A slightly snug pot is not a problem. Repot when roots lift the plant or water no longer enters the mix easily.

Plant

A simple care routine for Spider plant

  1. 1

Compare soil moisture with the weight of the pot.

  2. 2

Empty the outer pot after watering.

  3. 3

Separate plantlets once they have begun to form roots.

Observation

Changes worth checking

  • Many leaf tips turning brown
  • Variegation fading
  • A soft crown at soil level
Important

Watering frequency changes with light, temperature, pot size and potting mix. Use any interval as a reminder to check the plant, not as an automatic watering day.
