String of pearls: round leaves, light and careful watering

Curio rowleyanus. The round leaves store water, but delicate vines rot easily where they meet wet soil.

String of pearls

Light

Very bright; gentle sun helps maintain compact growth.

Watering

Water after the mix has dried well, using bead firmness as another clue.

Soil

A very free-draining succulent mix.

More useful detail

Care over time

Rhythm through the year

It grows faster in bright, warm conditions. In lower winter light, it needs much less water.

Growth and repotting

Lay vines over the mix so nodes can root. A shallow pot limits the volume of wet soil.

Plant

A simple care routine for String of pearls

  1. 1

Make sure light reaches the top of the pot.

  2. 2

Confirm the mix is dry before watering.

  3. 3

Water the soil without soaking the dense crown.

Observation

Changes worth checking

  • Translucent, soft beads
  • Vines drying at soil level
  • Long, sparsely covered sections
Important

The plant may be harmful if eaten. Keep trailing stems away from children and pets.
