Tradescantia: compact growth, colour and easy cuttings

Tradescantia zebrina. It grows and roots quickly, so regular pruning renews it better than keeping very long bare vines.

Tradescantia

Light

Bright, indirect light; low light weakens the colour.

Watering

Water after the surface has dried, without leaving the plant dry for a long time.

Soil

A light, free-draining mix.

More useful detail

Care over time

Rhythm through the year

Growth is fast in bright months and water needs checking more often. In winter it may slow considerably.

Growth and repotting

Stem cuttings are the easiest way to renew the plant. Do not enlarge the pot while the existing root ball remains small.

Plant

A simple care routine for Tradescantia

  1. 1

    Choose a bright position.

  2. 2

Pinch or cut stems above a node.

  3. 3

Plant rooted cuttings back into the same pot.

Observation

Changes worth checking

  • Long bare sections of stem
  • Browning at the base of vines
  • Loss of purple colour
Important

Watering frequency changes with light, temperature, pot size and potting mix. Use any interval as a reminder to check the plant, not as an automatic watering day.
