Venus flytrap: water, sun and winter dormancy

Dionaea muscipula. It does not need meat or traps triggered for entertainment; light, suitable water and dormancy matter most.

Venus flytrap

Light

Very bright, ideally with several hours of direct sun.

Watering

Use rainwater, distilled water or very low-mineral water; keep the mix moist during growth.

Soil

Acidic, nutrient-poor carnivorous-plant mix without ordinary fertilizer.

More useful detail

Care over time

Rhythm through the year

It needs a cooler winter dormancy when some traps naturally die back.

Growth and repotting

Repot into fresh carnivorous-plant mix, ideally before active growth begins.

Plant

A simple care routine for Venus flytrap

  1. 1

Check light and moisture before taking action.

  2. 2

Do not trigger traps unnecessarily or use ordinary fertilizer.

  3. 3

Track changes in new growth instead of judging only old damage.

Observation

Changes worth checking

  • The whole rosette blackening
  • Weak stretched leaves
  • Mineral deposits on the mix
Important

Watering frequency changes with light, temperature, pot size and potting mix. Use any interval as a reminder to check the plant, not as an automatic watering day.
