Care step by step

Scarifying a lawn

Scarifying removes thatch and cuts into the turf, so it is a stress as well as a maintenance task.

Good timing

Choose a period of active growth with moderate weather and soil that is neither saturated nor extremely dry.

When to wait

Do not scarify young, drought-stressed or weak turf, or immediately before unsuitable weather.

What to record

The area, depth, amount of thatch, weather and recovery over the following weeks.

Care

A useful routine

  1. 1

Mow to a suitable height and inspect the thatch layer.

  2. 2

Make a shallow pass and assess the turf before increasing intensity.

  3. 3

Remove debris and plan recovery, watering or overseeding only as needed.

Observation

Before you finish

  • The grass is actively growing.
  • The soil is workable rather than wet or hard.
  • Recovery conditions are expected after the work.
Important

Aggressive scarifying can severely thin a lawn. Match intensity to actual thatch and recovery conditions.
