Practical plant care

How to choose the right plant pot size

A large canopy does not always mean a large root system. Excess mix around a small root ball dries slowly, so gradual size increases and separate support for the canopy are safer.

Root ball

Its diameter and condition determine how much extra space is useful.

Drying rate

The more unrooted mix there is, the longer it can stay wet.

Stability

A heavy outer pot can steady a tall plant without enlarging the growing pot.

How to narrow down the cause

Compare roots with the pot

A photograph at repotting makes it easier to judge later whether the extra space was appropriate.

Learn the new pot weight

After repotting, wet and dry weights change, so the old watering rhythm is no longer reliable.

Guide

What to do step by step

  1. 1

Slide out the root ball and assess how densely roots circle it.

  2. 2

Choose the next modest size with clear drainage holes.

  3. 3

After repotting, learn the new drying rhythm before watering again.

Observation

What to watch next

  • Roots fit without being sharply bent.
  • There is no thick layer of unused wet mix around the ball.
  • The plant stands securely.
Important

Do not buy a pot several years ahead. Too much potting mix increases the risk of air-starved roots.
