Practical plant care

How to propagate pothos

Every cutting needs a node that can form roots and a new shoot. Several short cuttings planted together normally create a fuller plant than one very long vine.

Node

It belongs in water or moist medium while the leaf stays above the surface.

Length

A short cutting with one or two nodes is easy to monitor.

Fuller pot

Rooted pieces can be planted back beside the parent plant.

More useful detail

How to narrow down the cause

Label the cuttings

Recording the date and rooting method makes it easier to compare which sections develop healthy roots.

Avoid an oversized pot

A small root system is easier to manage in a modest container with drainage.

Guide

What to do step by step

  1. 1

Choose a healthy pest-free vine and cut sections containing nodes.

  2. 2

Root them in clean water or an airy moist medium.

  3. 3

Plant several healthy cuttings in a small draining pot.

Observation

What to watch next

  • The node stays firm.
  • Roots are pale and extending.
  • Leaves stay firm after potting.
Important

Pothos sap and tissue can irritate. Work cleanly, wash your hands and keep cuttings away from children and pets.
